Our Story
Preserving Tradition, Creating Memories
Meet Pavel
The Heart Behind Vaikla Sauna Retreat
My name is Pavel, and I'm honored to welcome you to Vaikla Puhkekeskus. This place holds a special significance in my life—it's not just a business venture, but a deeply personal journey of revival and connection.
My father was born in Alajõe, on the coast of Lake Peipsi, very near Vaikla. This region is the backdrop to some of my most cherished childhood memories. Growing up, I spent countless summers exploring these shores, learning the traditions of the Russian sauna from my family, relatives, and friends. These early experiences instilled in me a profound respect for the healing power of nature and ritual.
Over the past four years, I've dedicated myself to mastering the art of traditional Russian banya. I've attended saunas across Estonia and Russia, studying different regional approaches and techniques. This journey led me to train under a Russian Banya master, where I earned my certification in authentic gray sauna traditions. Working with direct clients has taught me that every person's sauna experience should be unique—there's no one-size-fits-all approach to wellness.
Recently, I began working closely with the property owner and local workers to revive Vaikla Puhkekeskus to its former glory. This region is very dear to my heart, and I'm committed to preserving its authentic character while sharing its treasures with visitors from around the world. My vision is to create a space where tradition meets personal care, where every guest feels the same sense of belonging and healing that I discovered here as a child.
The Sauna Ritual Philosophy
What sets our sauna experience apart is the individual approach I bring to each guest. Every sauna ritual is unique, lasting anywhere from 1 to 4 hours depending on your needs and the connection we build together.
During your ritual, you might experience Chinese tea tasting paired with local sweets and foods, hear stories about the history of sauna traditions and this special place, or simply enjoy peaceful silence—whatever feels right in the moment. I use traditional oak and birch venik (whisks), handmade scrubs crafted from natural ingredients, carefully selected aroma oils, and massage techniques passed down through generations.
For couples, I offer specialized rituals that create shared moments of relaxation and connection, blending ancient wellness practices with modern comfort.
